Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Race is the longest sled dog race in the eastern United States , there are a number of races of different lengths ( 250, 60 and 30 mile ) but the Can-Am Crown 250 is the longest, all races begin at Fort Kent's Main Street where spectators can cheer for the teams. All races finish at Lonesome Pine ski lodge in Fort Kent. In all there are more than 75 teams from the U.S. and Canada who compete at Fort Kent each year and the speeds depend on length of race and weather conditions but the dogs teams often average over 8 MPH, which over these types of long distances is truly amazing. ( In context Top Marathon runners achieve 5 to 6 MPH over 26 miles )
